Oscars red carpet: sugary glitz, loads of trains, and flawless grace

Hollywood's award season culminates with the Oscars ceremony, so A-listers who attend usually reserve their best outfits for last. The celebrities did not disappoint on Sunday.

A few patterns became apparent as the attendees streamed into the Dolby Theatre: lots of demure white, silver, and cream gowns; loose, flowing hair; dresses with trains; and a few fantastic flashes of colour. A few standout looks from the Oscars red carpet are shown here

soft elegance

The red carpet at the Oscars was transformed to a champagne colour for the first time in decades. The stars responded by giving their dresses, many of which were white, cream, or silver, an ethereal lightness.

Michelle Yeoh, who took up the best actress Oscar for "Everything Everywhere All at Once," dazzled in a floaty white sleeveless Dior gown, her long hair falling loosely in curls (a style that was popular on the red carpet), and a jewelled headpiece.

Yeoh said of her movie, "This was the perfect occasion to highlight that moms are superheroes.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who won for best supporting actress for her performance with Yeoh, wore a beautiful, shimmering off-white column gown by Dolce & Gabbana, which was the ideal complement to her figure.

Presenter Florence Pugh pushed the boundaries of fashion in a Valentino gown that was all billowing white taffeta on top and then split extra high to reveal a black miniskirt. Florence Pugh has been shutting down red carpets for months with eccentricity and swagger.

In addition, Malala Yousafzai, the Oscar-nominated executive producer of the documentary short "Stranger at the Gate," donned a sequined, hooded Ralph Lauren gown in silver with ruching at the waist.

Glam in pastel colours

The other best supporting actress nominees, including Curtis, carried a spectrum of colours to the Academy Awards, including pink, purple, and yellow.

Angela Bassett wowed in an amethyst Moschino gown with a bow neckline, a train, and a tonne of jewels. Her portrayal as Queen Ramonda in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" garnered her the first acting nomination for a performance in a Marvel movie.

With a cotton candy pink, sleeveless Prada gown with a Mandarin collar and a unique, fringed black train, Hong Chau, who received a nomination for her performance opposite Brendan Fraser in "The Whale," exuded sophistication.

Stephanie Hsu, the star of "Everything Everywhere All at Once," floated down the carpet at the Dolby Theatre wearing a strapless dress by Valentino in bubble gum pink with a full ball skirt. Her hair fell in beautiful waves.

And Irish actress Kerry Condon, who appeared in "The Banshees of Inisherin" alongside Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, wore a lemon yellow one-shoulder Versace gown with a second train, a clear Oscars trend.

Let's support the boys!

On red carpets for years, Hollywood's guys were a bit of an afterthought—tuxedo, rinse, repeat. but not anymore.

Harry Shum Jr., star of "Everything Everywhere," embraced his Asian roots by dressing in a white dinner jacket with midnight piping and a matching belted sash. He also performed a little dance on the red carpet for his "Glee" fans.

Austin Butler, the Oscar-nominated star of "Elvis," wore a Saint Laurent tuxedo fit for a king that was a little more formal than his other outfits from this award season.
